Google Penalty Recovery — Find Out What Actually Happened to Your Rankings

Your traffic has dropped. Keywords you used to rank for have gone. And nobody can tell you why.

Get Your Free Penalty Diagnosis

That is usually when a business calls us. And the first thing worth saying is that it may not even be a penalty. In our experience most sudden ranking drops turn out to be one of a handful of things, and until somebody actually looks, you're guessing.

At Techpullers, an SEO company in Kerala, we go through the site properly and find out what really happened before we touch anything. Our founder Aiswariya Kolora has 13+ years in SEO and she looks at these herself.

The Usual Suspects

What Usually Turns Out to Be Wrong

A spammy backlink profile, usually left behind by the previous agency

This is the most common one. The site used to rank, then the rankings started sliding, and the owner has no idea why. The content is perfectly fine. But when you go through the backlink profile there are dozens or hundreds of spammy links, bought from sites whose only purpose is selling domain authority.

Under the current Google updates, that kind of profile pulls your rankings down. Read our take on understanding Google penalties.

Something technical that nobody noticed

A lot of ranking drops are technical, and nobody realises. Here is a real one we have seen more than once. A dev team builds the new site on a subdomain and puts a noindex tag on it so Google doesn't crawl it while it's being built. Perfectly sensible. Then they migrate it to the live domain and forget to take the noindex off. It ends up on the homepage, and Google is now blocked from crawling and indexing the entire site.

No penalty. No warning in Search Console. Just a site quietly invisible to Google.

Keyword stuffing left over from before

Clients often come to us convinced their keywords are well placed, and then we find heavy keyword stuffing done by whoever had the site before. That sort of thing ranks for a few weeks, maybe a few months, and then it drops, because it goes against Google's guidelines.

Fake reviews being removed

This one hits local businesses. Agencies buy reviews, or pay people on Freelancer and Upwork to leave them. Google has been removing those at scale. We have had people come to us after their Google Business Profile reviews were taken down, thousands of them, all at once.

An actual manual action or algorithm hit

And sometimes it genuinely is a penalty. A manual action shows up as a notification in Google Search Console, telling you what Google flagged. An algorithmic drop doesn't notify you at all, you just watch the rankings go after an update rolls out.

The Diagnosis

How We Diagnose It

It depends entirely on what kind of drop you're dealing with, so the first job is working that out.

We go into your Google Search Console and check whether there is actually a manual action sitting there, and what it says. We look at when your traffic and rankings dropped and line that up against Google's update timeline. We run the site through an Ahrefs audit and see whether it is throwing up a lot of crawl errors, because if it is, the fix is technical. And we go through your backlink profile link by link.

We do a thorough check of the site first. Only then do we start fixing anything. Guessing at a recovery is how people make it worse.

The Recovery Work

What We Actually Fix

The backlink profile

We go through your links one at a time. We check the spam score of each site, and why it has one, and how relevant that link actually is to your business. There are a lot of sites out there whose entire purpose is to manipulate the web, and you don't want links from them.

Where we can, we go to the webmaster and ask for the link to be removed, because a removed link is better than a disavowed one. Where we can't, we build the disavow file and submit it through Google Search Console so Google ignores those links when it judges your site.

We don't over-disavow. Throwing your legitimate links into the disavow file will slow your recovery down, so we only disavow what is genuinely toxic.

Toxic backlink audit — reviewing spam score and relevance of every link in the profile

The content

If the content is thin, duplicated, stuffed with keywords, or churned out by AI, that has to be dealt with. We rewrite it properly, with a human writer, and we run it through Originality.ai so we know it reads as human. Google's recent core updates have been demoting mass-produced AI content, so this matters more than it used to.

The technical side

Crawl errors, noindex tags where they shouldn't be, broken canonicals, redirect loops. Our own dev team handles it. See our technical SEO work.

The reconsideration request

If there is a genuine manual action, once everything is fixed we put together the reconsideration request for Google: what was wrong, what we did about each thing, and the evidence. Google doesn't always approve it first time, and we'll tell you that upfront rather than pretend otherwise.

Client Story · Rishikesh Yog Nirvana

A Real Recovery

Rishikesh Yog Nirvana came to us with a backlink profile full of spammy links, built by the company they had used before. They used to rank. Then the rankings started dropping and they had no idea why. Their content was good enough, that wasn't the problem.

When we went through their backlinks, there were so many spammy ones. We disavowed most of them. The site is now bringing in organic traffic again and we're watching how the keywords come back.

We've done the same for tour operators, houseboat companies and law firms. Most of them arrived the same way, rankings falling, nobody able to explain it, and a backlink profile or a technical problem that somebody should have caught much earlier.

Prevention

How to Not End Up Here Again

  • Don't buy backlinks. Not from anyone. Most of the sites selling them exist purely to make money from people trying to lift their domain authority, and they are spammy.
  • Don't buy reviews. Google is removing them.
  • Don't let anyone stuff your pages with keywords or fill them with AI-generated filler.
  • Do keep an eye on your backlink profile, so a new toxic link gets caught before it accumulates into a problem. Our off-page SEO work covers this on an ongoing basis.

₹25,000to ₹75,000

Recovery project: ₹25,000 to ₹75,000, one-time, depending on how bad it is. A link-only cleanup, the backlink audit, the removal outreach and the disavow file, sits at the lower end. A full recovery with content cleanup across a lot of pages, technical fixes and a reconsideration request sits at the top.

Ongoing SEO afterwards: from ₹25,000/month. A recovered site with nobody watching it tends to drift back, so this is the honest recommendation, not an upsell.

Questions

FAQ

How do I know if I've actually been penalised?

Check Google Search Console. If there's a manual action, it will be sitting there with an explanation of what Google flagged. If there's nothing there but your traffic has fallen off, it is either an algorithmic drop or, very often, something technical that nobody noticed. That's what the diagnosis is for.

Can technical problems look like a penalty?

Yes, and they often do. We've seen a site go effectively invisible to Google because a noindex tag was left on the homepage after a migration. No penalty, no warning, just no traffic.

Can you guarantee recovery?

No, and be careful of anyone who says they can. Google doesn't always approve a reconsideration request first time. What we can do is find every problem, fix it properly, document it, and give you an honest timeline.

How long does it take?

For a manual action, usually a couple of months from diagnosis to approval, sometimes longer if Google comes back to us. An algorithmic recovery takes longer, because it depends on continuous improvement rather than a single approval.

Should I disavow all my backlinks?

No. Over-disavowing slows your recovery down. We only disavow what is genuinely toxic, and we check the spam score and relevance of each one before we do.

What if my previous agency caused this?

That is the most common situation we deal with. Bought links, exact-match anchors everywhere, keyword stuffing, sometimes fake reviews. We clean it up. We don't judge you for it, it happens to a lot of businesses.

How much does it cost?

The diagnosis is free. The recovery project is ₹25,000 to ₹75,000 depending on severity, and ongoing SEO afterwards starts at ₹25,000/month.
